Raila says termination of envoy job was at his request
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s tenure as the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa has come to an end, as the organization indicated that the NEPAD Agency will take full charge of the docket.
In a press release Raila reacted to the announcement of his role’s termination saying he had raised concern over his position three weeks prior.
Raila said he had informed African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat of his limited availability for the role, during a meeting at the 2nd Dakar African Infrastructure Financing Summit in Dakar, Senegal three weeks ago.
Raila expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the continent and its people, stating that infrastructure development is a crucial factor in lifting Africa out of poverty and underdevelopment. He also commended the transformation of the NEPAD Agency to the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, which occurred during his tenure.
Raila said, “It has been a great pleasure and honour serving our Continent and our people and addressing Infrastructure development, which we agree is the greatest contributor to our unending struggle to lift ourselves out of poverty and under-development.”
He added, “I am proud to have made a contribution to the transformation of the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, among other contributions during my tenure. Many challenges remain, including the inaction by the Continent’s leadership and vested interests outside the continent that are only too keen to keep Africa in its present condition.”
In his statement dated February 19, Faki commended Raila’s leadership in leveraging infrastructure as a key priority in the continent, acknowledging his invaluable role in the journey.
He said, “Your role in this journey, Excellency, has been invaluable. Allow me to express my profound gratitude for accepting to serve in this role during the transition period, which has now come to a happy conclusion.”
Raila has stated that he will alert the African Union when he is available to serve again.
“I will be indicating when I might be available for deployment on continental assignment as circumstances change.”
The former Prime Minister was appointed to the position in October 2018 as part of the African Union’s drive to expedite the integration of the continent through infrastructure. The African Union’s decision to end his tenure was made public on Thursday.
His tenure saw him play a significant role in advancing infrastructure development in Africa. He has been a vocal advocate for increased investment in infrastructure, citing its importance in driving economic growth and sustainable development.
