Raila raises concerns over President Ruto’s international trips
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has criticized President Ruto’s foreign trips since his inauguration, querying the source of funds for the trips following the government’s claim that they found empty coffers.
Raila, who was speaking at a roadside rally while engaging residents in Ruaraka and Mathare constituencies, claimed the President and his team used Ksh 200 million to attend the Queens burial in September.
“They say they found the government treasury bankrupt. In the same month, they went to Europe to bury the queen, they spent Ksh 200 million, where did that come from? They have gone to Ethiopia, Uganda and Tanzania. These people are not to be trusted at all,” Raila said.
Since his inauguration, the President has visited five nations. A week after his inauguration, Ruto flew to England to attend the late Queen Elizabeth’s burial. Ruto then traveled to New York, where he attended the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The Head of State left for Ethiopia on October 6 for his first official visit to Africa where he held bilateral talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during his visit.
A day after returning from Ethiopia, the president departed the country on invitation from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni as the country celebrated their 60th year of independence.
Ruto then traveled to Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam for bilateral talks with President Samia Suluhu.
Raila also stated that the cost of living was becoming unreasonably high for ordinary Kenyans and that corrective actions were needed to alleviate the burden. He accused Ruto of making false promises about the cost of living during his campaigns, but admitted that he was only 30 days into office.
Raila accused Ruto of failing to reduce the cost of flour, cooking oil, and fuel, as well as failing to implement his ‘Hustler Fund’ plan. He also criticized Ruto’s decision to lift the ban on GMOs, claiming that they were also prohibited in other countries.
Raila further claimed that the subsidized fertiliser Ruto offered for sale at Ksh 3,500 was provided for free by the Russian government.
