Raila: Prepare for ‘mother of all demonstrations’ on Monday
Opposition leader Raila Odinga has announced that there will be more protests across the country, with a large demonstration set to take place on Monday.
Speaking after anti-government protests on Thursday, Raila said that Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition would continue to push for the Kenya Kwanza administration to address the high cost of living in the country.
He also demanded the opening of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission servers to investigate last year’s presidential election. Raila contested the results in the Supreme Court, but his petition was dismissed.
The protests have been largely peaceful, but police have been accused of using excessive force to disrupt the demonstrations.
The protests have seen significant numbers of people taking to the streets across the country, demanding change.
Raila has called Monday’s demonstration the “mother of all demonstrations,” and warned that it will go ahead “irrespective of what our detractors say or think.”
He insisted that despite the police crackdown on the demonstrations, the opposition will not stop pushing for change.
“We are very reasonable people, and we believe that we have got very valid reasons on why we need to have a conversation, but in the absence of preparedness of the other side to cooperate, these demonstrations are going to continue,” Raila said.
President William Ruto is yet to concede to demands by the opposition, despite the pressure from international organisations and local leaders calling for dialogue.
He however committed to respect the constitution and uphold the rule of law even as opposition leader Raila persists with anti-government protests.
Ruto on Thursday also said he has promised US President Joe Biden among other world leaders, that his government will respect the independence of institutions.
“Just yesterday (Wednesday), we had a virtual meeting with US President Joe Biden and other world leaders at the democracy summit where I underscored our commitment to constitutionalism and the rule of law and respect for institutions,” Ruto said during a government summit with the US Chamber of Commerce in Nairobi.
The third day of protests ended in journalists nursing injuries from police attacks. According to the Media Council of Kenya over 25 journalists have been injured since the protests began on March 20.
Several police officers have been injured in the three days of protests, with National Police Service saying 23 officers were injured on Monday, March 27.
Three people have been reported dead during the protests with others nursing bullet wounds in various parts of the country.
