Radio icon Edward Kwach dies
Veteran radio presenter Edward Carey Kwach has died while undergoing treatment for meningitis, his family said in a statement on Tuesday morning.
Until his death, Kwach worked as a radio host at Standard Media Group’s Spice FM.
According to the family, Kwach died following a short illness on Monday, April 28, 2025.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother, Carey… He touched the lives of many through his voice and presence on the airwaves, becoming a trusted and familiar companion to listeners across the country,” the statement read in part.
The family remembered him for his impactful career, noting that his voice and presence resonated with many listeners nationwide.
“He will be remembered not only for his warmth and humour but also for his exceptional taste in music, which brought joy and comfort to countless people.”
Soon after news of his passing broke, people who had worked or interacted with him took to social media to condole with the family and remember who he was.
Radio presenter Nick Odhiambo, who was also his cousin, said that as a trailblazer in the radio industry, Kwach would be remembered for bringing joy to countless people in the country.
“Heartbreaking. A colleague and a friend. Rest in peace, Edward Kwach,” said sports presenter Carol Radull.
Radio personality Maina Kageni mourned Kwach as a broadcasting legend, saying, “Edward, I’ve said this oh so often, you were the greatest radio personality Kenya has ever produced.”
His passing comes shortly after the family made a public appeal for blood donations during his hospitalisation.
“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support during his illness, particularly to those who donated blood, visited, and kept him in their thoughts and prayers,” the family expressed.
Kwach initially pursued law before transitioning to media in the early 2000s, where he captivated audiences during his stints at Capital FM, Homeboyz Radio, Kiss FM, EA FM, and Nation FM.
He also worked at Urban Radio in Kisumu, where he co-hosted the breakfast show alongside Chris Okinda and Brian Oduor.
