The First Lady, Mama Rachel Ruto, took a bold step towards promoting peace in the conflict-ridden pastoralist communities of Baringo County.
She attended an interdenominational prayer service at the Kenya Forestry Research Institute in Marigat, alongside religious leaders from Baringo, Samburu, Turkana, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
The event was aimed at finding a permanent solution to the conflicts that have plagued the region for years. The religious leaders affirmed the need for investment in alternative jobs for youth and women, reducing the overdependence on livestock for livelihood.
Mama Rachel Ruto emphasized the importance of investing in agriculture, citing food security as a key factor in reducing conflicts among warring communities. The 4 counties represented in the meeting have been severely affected by prolonged drought, with some areas experiencing more than four consecutive seasons without rainfall.
The First Lady urged religious leaders to use their platforms to encourage peace among communities impacted by cattle rustling. She noted that promoting peace would instill trust among the affected communities and lead to long-term solutions for sustainable peace and stability.
Mama Rachel Ruto’s presence at the prayer service showed her commitment to finding a lasting solution to the conflicts in the region. Her call for investment in agriculture and the promotion of peace among pastoralist communities is a step in the right direction towards ensuring peace and stability in the region.
