Property worth millions destroyed by fire in Kajiado’s shopping center
Property worth millions was reduced to ashes as engulfing fire gutted business premises at Illasit shopping center, Loitokitok Sub-county in Kajiado on Saturday morning.
According to John Mwema, a resident, the fire that broke out around 3am is suspected to have been caused by electricity fault.
The fire spread fast into business premises.
The two buildings that were affected housed eateries, butcheries, lodgings and several general shops.
Clients who were in lodgings escaped on time unhurt.
There were no reported casualties.
“The fire spread so fast in the two buildings amid heavy smoke reducing everything to ash as the businesses owners and locals watched helplessly.Nothing was salvaged,” Mwema said.
One of the affected businessmen told NTV he lost more than Sh3 million both in stock and cash that he had in his bar to the incident.
‘It’s a blow to me in this economic hard time.This was my sole source of income.I don’t know how I will recover from the loss,He said on phone.
Entarara Location Senior Chief Mr Jackson Nakasi said the fire incident was the worst to hit the area in decades.
“Dozens of families have been left without a source of income. Its painful not only for the victims but the entire neighborhood,” Chief Nakasi said.
He further pointed a finger to the County firefighter department over what he said was delayed response.
“The fire engine driver was unreachable by the time of the incident. At least they could have helped to put out the fire on time and safe some properties. Its so painful,” he added
Kajiado South Mp Samuel Parashina termed the incident as unfortunate saying the county fire department ought to be well prepared to respond to such cases on time.
“It was an unfortunate incident. The county firefighters ought to be more alert to respond to such incidents,” Parashina said.
Illasit town is one of the fastest growing shopping centres along Loitok tok highway in Kajiado South Sub county.
