MPs aim to entrench CDF in law and up the allocation to 5 per cent

In an effort to keep the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), MPs have introduced two bills to amend the Constitution, creating a new front in the conflict with civil society that prompted the Supreme Court to rule the fund unconstitutional.

The two Bills seek to entrench the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), where constituencies will be entitled to at least five per cent of the total annual revenue due to the national government.

Currently, the treasury allocates 2.5 per cent of national revenue to NG-CDF amounting to KSh.  44.3 billion in the current financial year. If enacted, the kitty could double to KSh. 88 billion annually.

Kenya to build a 600km gas pipeline from Tanzania to Mombasa

To reduce energy prices, Kenya will move forward with constructing a natural gas pipeline from Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam, to Mombasa and ultimately to the capital Nairobi, according to President William Ruto.

Ruto said the 600-kilometre pipeline is a priority item ending a delay of over one year.

The pipeline whose cost is estimated at KSh. 132 billion is part of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Natural Gas Transportation that former President Uhuru Kenyatta signed with Tanzania’s president, Samia Suluhu in May last year.

Pump prices could fall from Friday this week

Pump prices are expected to ease for the first time in nearly a year in the wake of a sharp drop in the cost of refined fuel imported into the country.

The fall will follow a drop of 10 percent to $105.96 per barrel from $117.53 in the cost of imported refined fuel that will be used to determine prices in the monthly cycle starting Friday midnight.

Russia condemned over brutal bombarding

Russia has come under heavy criticism for its bombardment of Ukrainian cities, including its first-ever use of missile attacks on the Kyiv city center.

In addition to promising continuous military assistance, the US claimed that the “brutal” attacks had attacked non-military objectives such as a university and playground.

Antonio Guterres, the head of the UN, expressed his “profound dismay”.

The explosion on a crucial bridge connecting Russia and Crimea on Saturday, according to Vladimir Putin, was the reason behind the strikes.

According to Ukraine, 83 missiles were fired, more than 43 of which were intercepted.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, asserted in a defiant video that, “You cannot intimidate Ukraine. It can only become more cohesive.”

Sports

Olympic champion and world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge believes that solid planning and treating sports as a job have helped him live a long life.

The 37-year-old Kipchoge, who has been competing for the past 20 years, claimed that his longevity may be attributed to his love of athletics as a sport and his dedication to training over financial gain.

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has been ruled out until December with knee ligament damage after coming off injured in the defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

British sprinter CJ Ujah has been banned for 22 months after he tested positive for two banned substances at the Tokyo Olympics.
