Journalists condemn Senator Cheruiyot’s attack on press freedom
The Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) has condemned in the strongest terms utterances made by Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot who referred to the media as a cartel. In a statement on his Twitter page on Monday, Cheruiyot, who is also the Senate Majority Leader, claimed that President William Ruto is intent on crushing Kenya’s media, alongside the banking sector.
“President Ruto will succeed in crushing every cartel in the country save for two that are extremely powerful, banks and media. Both are very powerful, influential, and synergise so well to protect each other’s interest. For public good, a way must be found,” the senator tweeted.
KEG President Churchill Otieno issued a statement later on Monday, expressing alarm over Cheruiyot’s reckless and worrying post.
Undernutrition in mothers is rising sharply: UNICEF
According to UNICEF, Kenya is among 12 countries deemed to be in food crisis, that between 2020 and 2022, the number of pregnant or breastfeeding women suffering from acute malnutrition increased by 25 percent, from 5.5 to 6.9 million.
The UNICEF report, based on data analysis of women in nearly every country in the world, estimates that more than one billion women and adolescent girls suffer from undernutrition — which leaves them underweight and of short stature — and from a deficiency in essential micronutrients as well as from anemia.
Most of them are in the world’s poorest regions, with South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa constituting 68 percent of women and adolescent girls who are underweight and 60 percent of those suffering from anemia.
