Pres. Ruto tells Sudan generals to ‘stop the nonsense’

Kenyan President William Ruto on Wednesday urged Sudan’s warring generals to “stop the nonsense” and called for a rethink of the African Union (AU) to better address conflicts in the continent.

Around 1,000 people have been killed and nearly a million displaced in Sudan since battles between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who leads a paramilitary force erupted in April.

“We need to tell those generals to stop the nonsense,” Ruto told a gathering of African lawmakers in South Africa.

Kebs managing director among 27 suspended over sale of condemned sugar

Kenya Bureau of Standards managing director Benard Njiraini is among 27 multi-agency officials that have been suspended over release of condemned sugar.

In a statement on Wednesday, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said the officials have been suspended over the sale of 20,000 bags of condemned sugar worth more than KES 163 million.

Njiraini and a number of managers including scientists based at Kenya Bureau of Standards were on Tuesday grilled by Directorate of Criminal Investigations, who were conducting the probe in which condemned sugar was released to a trader in 2018 who later repackaged and sold it to unsuspecting Kenyans.

Tanzanian traders strike over high taxes in rare protest

More than 1,000 shops in Tanzania’s busiest market remained shut for a third day on Wednesday as traders protested a new tax, in a rare public protest against the government.

Stores in Kariakoo, a massive market located in the financial capital Dar es Salaam, closed their doors on Monday, calling for an end to “multiple taxes, harassment by police and the tax collectors” after the new levy came into effect last month.

“We pay a lot of taxes but the closure of shops was prompted by the demand to register our stores and pay the new store tax,” one of the traders said during a meeting with Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Wednesday that was broadcast live on television.

Migrant girl, 8, dies in US custody at Texas border

An eight-year-old migrant girl died in US custody in Texas on Wednesday, a tragedy that tempered news of a sharp drop in attempted illegal crossings of the southern US border.

The girl died in Harlingen, a Texas border city near the Gulf of Mexico.

“The child and her family were in custody at the Harlingen Station where she experienced a medical emergency,” US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement.

“Emergency Medical Services were called to the station and transported her to the local hospital where she was pronounced dead,” the statement said, adding that an investigation was opened into the death.
