CS Kindiki warns politicians to stay away from Shakahola forest
Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has told opposition leader Raila Odinga to keep off from Shakahola forest as it remains a restricted area for security operations. The CS said they have gazetted Shakahola as a scene of crime and have also restricted even the media to take images of the exhumation of bodies as the government will be sued for violating human rights.
“We cannot mix national security with politics, we understand politicians and they play a key role in our democracy, but we cannot mix national security and politics,” Kindiki said.
On Friday, Raila Odinga was blocked by security officers on his way into the Shakahola forest. According to CS Kindiki, a government gazette notices only people with a crucial duty to carry in the forest, which up to now has claimed 112 innocent lives, will be allowed.
Richard Ngatia seeks re-election as President of Kenya National Chamber of Commerce
Business mogul Richard Ngatia has launched a campaign to retain his position as the Chamber President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the upcoming elections to be held on June 8th, 2023.
Ngatia met with delegates from the six coastal counties at the Red Cross Hall in Malindi town, where he was endorsed by regional delegates. He will be deputized by Abduwali Shariff from Mombasa County.
The businessman will be seeking a second term as KNCCI President, having served since 2019. He has been instrumental in helping Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to get government incentives, especially during the Covid-19 period.
Clergy calls for speedy investigation into Shakahola killings amid political controversy
The Methodist Church of Kenya Coast Region Conference is urging the Commission of Inquiry formed by President William Ruto to investigate the Shakahola killings to expedite the investigation so that justice can prevail.
Meanwhile, Raila Odinga has stated that he will go to court to halt President William Ruto’s move to create a commission of inquiry into the Shakahola killings, arguing that the president has no such powers under the constitution.
At least 27 dead in Peru gold mine fire tragedy
At least 27 workers have died in a fire at a gold mine in a remote area of southern Peru, authorities said Sunday, making it one of the worst mining tragedies in the South American country’s recent history.
Grief-stricken relatives gathered near the mine looking for news of their loved ones.
“Where are you darling, where are you?” cried Marcelina Aguirre Quispe, whose husband was among the victims.
“We know there was a short circuit and from that an explosion. We are very shocked by everything that happened,” said Francisco Idme Mamani, whose 51-year-old brother Frederico also perished.
