Kibra fire
National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) will today hold a press briefing at PCEA Kibra / Masjid Al-Aqsa Mosque to assess damage and engage community dialogue for peace.
This after the Mosque burned yesterday night to the ground after the Azimio anti-government protests.
Kenya Airways posts worst-ever loss
Kenya‘s troubled national carrier, Kenya Airways, said on Monday that its losses for last year more than doubled to $290 million, the worst results it has posted in its history.
The airline, whose slogan is “The Pride of Africa”, has been running losses for years, despite the government pumping in millions of dollars to keep it afloat.
Full-year losses for the period ended December 2022 were 38.3 billion Kenyan shillings ($290 million), up from $120 million a year earlier, the carrier said, blaming high fuel costs and a weakening Kenyan shilling.
One dead in Kenya as fresh opposition protests turn violent
A young man was shot dead in Kenya on Monday, a hospital said, as anti-government protests turned increasingly violent, with police firing tear gas at opposition leader Raila Odinga’s convoy and his supporters, and looters going on the rampage.
The veteran politician has called for regular protests every Monday and Thursday, accusing President William Ruto of stealing last year’s election and of failing to control the surging cost of living.
The protesters defied a warning by the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome that the demonstrations in Nairobi and in Odinga’s stronghold of Kisumu were “illegal”.
MCK condemns attack on journalists covering protests
The Media Council of Kenya strongly condemns attacks on journalists covering ongoing protests, including physical attacks, destruction of equipment, and loss of valuables.
The Council has highlighted the vital role played by journalists in providing accurate information to the public, and stresses that attacks on them while carrying out their duties are unacceptable.
This comes as several journalists, both local and international, have been attacked in the on going protests with some loosing their tools of trade.
