Maseno University student killed; police allege self-defence in Maandamano Monday protests

A Maseno University student was killed during the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya protests in Maseno.  Unfortunately, what began as a peaceful demonstration turned violent as the protesters invaded Sairam supermarket in Maseno town and other businesses along Kisumu-Busia road. The protesters lit bonfires and barricaded stones along the road.

As tensions rose, the students began pelting stones at the police line, causing damage to 10 houses and the police station. Six police officers were injured during the skirmishes, and the officers, who had run out of teargas canisters and blanks, were forced to fire live bullets.

DP Gachagua calls on Raila to end protests, says they hurt economy

Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has blamed the opposition coalition led by Raila Odinga for causing economic losses due to their protests against the government.

Speaking in Mombasa on Monday, Gachagua said that many business people in Nairobi’s central business district did not open their shops and businesses due to fear of looting and destruction of property by protesters.

He claimed that the country had lost almost KES 2 billion in terms of business and this was money that should have been circulating in the economy.

He urged Raila and his allies to call off the chaos, the mayhem and the intimidation, saying that they were destroying the economy and undermining democracy.

Sacked Facebook moderators sue Meta in Kenya

A total of 43 Facebook content moderators in Kenya who were sacked in January are to sue the social media behemoth’s parent Meta for unfair dismissal, according to a statement published on their behalf Monday.

Meta, which also owns Instagram and WhatsApp, is seeking to slash its workforce by around a quarter inside six months as the tech sector endures bumpy times with Facebook, which became Meta in late 2021, notably battling a slowdown in online advertising.

“In January, 260 content moderators working at Facebook’s moderation hub in Nairobi, Kenya, were told that they would be made redundant by Sama, the outsourcing firm that has run the office since 2019,” the statement read.
