Suspects in KES 130M gold scam arraigned in court
Two suspects accused of defrauding an American citizen of $1 million USD in a fake gold scam were arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts and released on KES 500,000 cash bail.
Nicholas Otieno Ndolo, alias Nick, the director of DSI Mining and Minerals Ltd, and Thomas Otieno Ngoe, the director of AFRICORP Legal consultancy, were arrested following a complaint lodged by the victim at Capitol Hill police station.
After the victim transferred $1 million USD from his account at the Northern Trust Bank in the United States to AFRICOP’s Equity bank account, ‘Nick’ sent several documents through WhatsApp as proof of the sale of gold.
Long-awaited Nairobi rains bring relief
Nairobi and its environs experienced a downpour of rain yesterday night through to the morning after a prolonged dry spell, marking the beginning of the long-awaited long rains.
The rainfall has been heavy and lasted for several hours, causing traffic snarl-ups along major highways. Motorists were stranded in traffic for hours as some roads became impassable due to flooding.
Motorists were seen complaining stranded in traffic on their social media pages. “Rongai traffic is getting worse with the rains,” wrote one @Qolloe.
Blinken presses Ethiopia reconciliation, offers aid on post-war visit
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday urged Ethiopia to ensure accountability over the brutal Tigray conflict but voiced guarded optimism at preserving peace, on a trip that marked an easing of a wartime rift between the longtime allies.
On the latest trip by a senior US official to Africa as China and Russia makes inroads on the continent, Blinken offered $331 million in new humanitarian aid but stopped short of backing Ethiopia’s readmission to a major trade pact.
The top US diplomat said greater economic relations with Ethiopia depended on its commitment to both “reconciliation and accountability” over the war, which the United States estimates has cost about 500,000 lives.
Malawi urges global help after Cyclone Freddy kills 225
Malawi’s president appealed Wednesday for global support to tackle “a national tragedy” after Cyclone Freddy pummelled the southeast African nation, causing flooding and mudslides that have killed hundreds.
The storm returned to the African coast at the weekend for a second time in less than three weeks, leaving a trail of death and destruction, but it had largely spared Malawi the first time around.
“The level of devastation we are dealing with here is greater than the resources we have at our disposal,” President Lazarus Chakwera said in declaring two weeks of national mourning.
