Press Review: The day’s top stories at a glance

Today is  Thursday, March 9, 2023.

You can read the Daily Nation e-paper here: https://epaper.nation.africa/

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s making headlines.

A lady of many firsts rests…

Kenya’s first female Councilor, Mayor, MP and acting Speaker of Parliament Grace Onyango dies at 98. The trained teacher was installed as mayor of the city of Kisumu in 1965.

Kenya’s first female MP died while undergoing treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital in Kisumu.

Kisumu governor, Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has eulogised her as the ‘pillar of women leadership’. In a social media post the governor wrote, “She broke the ceiling in leadership long before the country started the campaigns for gender parity. Grace was selfless, focused, brave and visionary. A mother and grand mother to many, she will be remembered for mentoring girls and young women leaders.”

Ex-Treasury CS Yatani threatens to sue Controller of Budget for defamation

Former Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, Ukur Yatani, has said he will take legal action against the Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o for making false and malicious allegations against him.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Yatani denied that he had pressured her to make unauthorized payments during his time in office and described the claims as “false, malicious and actionable in law”.

Additionally, he claimed that the Controller of Budget’s portrayal of his acts as intended to promote the theft of public funds was slanderous and derogatory of his character and his many years of professional service to the public.

“This depiction is libelous and defamatory to my character and professional service to the public in many capacities. I have instructed my lawyers to study her utterances and advice on a law suit against her person,” Yatani said.

The US’ candidate to head the World Bank tours Kenya

The United States’ candidate to head the World Bank, Ajay Banga, on Wednesday called for a revamp of the development model to better meet the challenge of climate change.

Banga, who is on trip to Kenya, said the world cannot continue to “pursue the prior model of (an) emission heavy growth system,” and rallied for adaptation.

“We cannot afford it, our children cannot afford it,” he told reporters in Nairobi.

The 63-year-old Indian American was last month nominated by US President Joe Biden to head the global lender after its current chief David Malpass announced plans to step down early.

The nomination comes amid a push for development lenders to revamp and address global problems like environmental issues more effectively.

Kenyan innovators turn e-waste to bio-robotic prosthetic

Two portraits of Albert Einstein hang on the walls of a makeshift laboratory on Nairobi’s outskirts, inspiring a pair of self-taught Kenyan innovators who have built a bio-robotic prosthetic arm out of electronic scrap. Cousins Moses Kiuna, 29, and David Gathu30created their first prosthetic arm in 2012, after their neighbour lost a limb in an industrial accident.

But their latest invention is a significant upgrade, according to the duo. The device uses a headset receiver to pick up brain signals and convert them to an electric current, which is then sent to a transmitter that wirelessly relays commands to the arm, prompting it into action. It all happens in less than two seconds.

“We saw people living with disabilities go through a lot of struggles and desired to make them… (feel) far more abled,” Gathu said. The high cost of prosthetics means only one out of 10 people in need are able to access them globally, with the World Health Organization warning that such exclusion adds to the burden of disability.
