President Ruto to commission Mwache dam in Kwale
President Wiliam Ruto is in Kinango constituency, Kwale county for the commissioning of the construction of Mwache Dam. The project is expected to sustainably increase bulk water supply for domestic and irrigation to Mombasa and Kwale Counties.
It will also provide additional 186,000M3/day domestic water and 100,000M3/day for irrigation. According to the ministry of water, sanitation and irrigation, the dam will provide water to irrigate 6,250 acres in Kwale County with potential a gross production value of KES 1.2 billion annually. It is expected to benefit over 2 million people in by 2030 as well as create over 30,000 jobs of irrigated farming.
The KES. 18 billion project awarded to Sinohydro Corporation Limited of China is projected to take 54 months and will be completed by 26th Aug 2026.Construction works will include a Roller Compacted Concrete type, 84 M high and crest length of 530M. The reservoir capacity will be 118 Million Cubic Metres.
Other structures include spillway, stilling basin, intake tower, water delivery pipe line, bottom outlet facilities and other ancillary facilities. A total of 710 out of an estimated 1,680 affected parcels of land have been successfully acquired and handed over to contractor.
Three affected schools namely Fulugani Primary, Nunguni Primary School and Mwache Bridge ECDE will be relocated to new sites which have already been acquired by the contractor and will have improved facilities.
The government is also undertaking construction of seven other dams across the country. They include Arror and Kimwarer dams in Elgeyo Marakwet county, Makamini dam(Kwale), Itare dam (Nakuru county), Soin Koru(Kericho & Kisumu), Siyoi Muruny(West Pokot) and Thwake dam(Kitui & Makueni).
President Ruto is also expected in Nyandarua and Nakuru counties later today.
