Ruto tells those dealing in illegal drugs to close shop and leave the country

President William Ruto has issued a warning about rising drug abuse, instructing security agencies to close all loopholes that facilitate the illegal trade.

The President spoke in Kilifi County at the opening of the Mtwapa-Kwa Kadzengo-Kilifi Road, which is part of the 454-kilometer Malindi-Lunga Lunga-Tanga-Bagamoyo East African Coastal Road Corridor that connects Kenya and Tanzania.

He stated that the time has come for those involved in the illegal trade to close their doors and leave the country.

“We must close all the loopholes and all the routes and make sure all those selling illegal drugs no matter their class are dealt with firmly,” he said.

According to a survey conducted by the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse Authority (NACADA), 4.9 million Kenyans aged 15 to 65 are abusing at least one drug or other substance. According to the President, the rise in drug abuse has caused many families to suffer.

“Many of our children are suffering because of substance abuse,” he said.

Kenya, which was once a stopover on the route to Europe, is now a major destination for heroin and other drugs, with addiction on the rise as tonnes of powder pass through East Africa.

Mombasa has become the main port of entry for drugs destined for Kenya as well as those destined for other countries. Smugglers have found a reliable place to offload their products due to high levels of corruption and a lack of adequate oversight.

Kenyans are addicted to a variety of drugs, including cannabis, tobacco, alcohol, prescription drugs, heroin, and cocaine.

In a survey of one-third of Kenya’s counties in 2018, the Ministry of Health estimated that 27,000 people were injecting or smoking heroin.

The Geneva-based NGO Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime estimated 55,000 injectors alone, pointing to a higher overall figure.

According to NACADA, heroin is now the second-most consumed drug in the country, trailing only cannabis.

Kenya established a coastguard in 2018, increased container checks at Mombasa ports, and began participating in an Interpol-led drug detection programme at Nairobi International Airport efforts the President expects will be vital in the renewed fight against the illegal trade.

Combating drug traffickers is insufficient without rehabilitating those who have become addicted. According to the UNODC, there are about ten clinics in Kenya that serve an estimated 7,000 heroin addicts, but they cannot reach everyone who needs help.
