President Ruto reiterates need to eliminate cartels from food production industry
The Kenyan government has announced plans to eliminate brokers and middlemen in order to reduce the cost of food production in the country.
President William Ruto stated that this intervention at the production level is targeted and will increase productivity among farmers.
To further this goal, the National Government Administration will be collecting data on farmers to inform policy decisions.
“We must register our farmers so that we can tell their acreage, the crops they cultivate and the inputs they require,” Ruto said.
In his address to Regional and County Commissioners at State House in Nairobi, Ruto also emphasized that corruption will not be tolerated in his administration.
“We must be transparent so that Government services can get to Kenyans as intended,” he added.
As part of its long-term plan to make Kenya food stable, the government will also be using stockists to distribute fertilizers and implementing an e-voucher system to provide affordable fertilizers to farmers.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, and Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi were among those present at the meeting.
Gachagua called on the provincial administrators to serve the people rather than suppress them, and reminded them not to engage in politics that could divide the country.
“Do not engage in politics. That is not your constituency. Do what is right and serve all Kenyans, their backgrounds notwithstanding,” Gachagua said.
