President Ruto promises to construct 100 dams as a measure to mitigate food insecurity
President William Ruto has committed to build at least 100 dams across the country as part of a long-term solution to the country’s drought and stravation problems.
On Thursday, October 20, while giving his inaugural Mashujaa Day speech at Uhuru Gardens, the head of state said that dam development will be a long-term solution to ensuring Kenyans have access to inexpensive food.
The president stated that his administration intends to double the amount of land under irrigation to 1.4 million acres during the next three years.
“200,000 acres will be under rice irrigation and 500,000 under other food crops. Rice production in Bunyala, the Tana Delta, Rohole in Garissa, Mwea and Ahero will take priority,” Ruto said.
“Irrigation is the ultimate solution in guaranteeing food security. We are working on mechanisms, through public-private partnerships, to construct at least 100 dams,” he added.
Ruto went on to say that his administration would continue with the fertilizer subsidy scheme in the short term, but that in the medium term, the government aims to have fertilizer manufactured in collboration with EAC countries.
He continued by stating that the administration has made plans to make 6 million bags of various sorts of fertilizer available over the long rainy season.
“Our government’s first intervention to address the fertiliser challenge and make it available to counties and regions that plant in the short rain season was to import 1.5 million 50kg bags and distribute them at a lower cost of KSh 3,500,” he added.
The president also addressed immediate, mid and long-term solutions to drought and Climate Change mitigation and asked every Kenyan to plant at least 300 trees.
“I will ask the ministry concerned to issue a small certificate to anyone who completes their round of three hundred trees,” Ruto said.
President Ruto asked the Kenya Forest Service to hire additional 2,700 forest rangers and 600 forest officers to protect water towers and fight off encroachment.
