President Ruto flags off food relief to famine-stricken counties
President William Ruto has today, September 26, flagged off relief food to over three and a half million Kenyans facing drought at State House Nairobi.
The President flagged off 50 trucks carrying 20,000 bags of rice, 24,000 bags of beans, cooking oil and 450 bags of assorted animal feeds to ten counties that are worst affected by drought.
“Currently we have 23 counties across the country that are suffering the serious and severe effects of drought,” he said.
The President directed the Ministry of Water to mobilize water boozers to deliver water to areas that are in urgent need.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been tasked with conducting weekly meetings to assess food and water needs countrywide and advise on what strategy should be employed.
County governments are also to make revisions in their budget to provide more funds to fight the drought.
“I have also told the Deputy President being the chair of IBEK to make sure county governments are facilitated adjust their budgets so that they can make resources available,” said President Ruto.
Speaking at the event, Council of Governors Anne Waiguru said governors have agreed to increase budgetary allocations to fight food and water shortages.
She urged the President to fasten the process of releasing the Drought Emergency Fund and the equitable share funds to aid the fight against drought further.
According to the National drought Management Authority, the ten counties that have reached the alarm level of drought are Laikipia, Tana River, and Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Mandera, Garissa, Turkana, Wajir, Samburu, and Marsabit.
NDMA further indicates the number of Kenyans in need of emergency food aid is expected to rise to around 4.35 million between October and December.
Kenya Defense Forces and National Youth Service (NYS) have been tasked with transporting food relief to the ten counties.
President said the next consignment will be on Friday, September, 30.
