Posta workers’ union issue strike notice over delayed salaries
Kenyans will not access Posta Kenya services across the country from November 2 next week due to a strike which has been called by the Communication Workers union to protest the delay in payment of salaries.
According to the union, over 2,500 Posta Kenya employees have not been paid for the last five months adding to the struggle of an already high cost of living.
Communication Workers Union National Treasurer Joseph Rwanjau says all employees will down their tools from next week and all Post offices across the country remain closed until employees are paid all their dues.
Rwanjau said that Posta Kenya employees will heed the call to close their offices and participate in the national strike which has been called by Union Secretary General Benson Okwaro.
He said that many of the employees are suffering and struggling with house rent and food stuff for their families due to salary arrears as the corporation struggles with a lack of enough money to cater to its employees.
He has called for the national government to come out and avert the crisis to save the corporation from collapsing as well as ensuring workers are paid all their arrears without delay.
Speaking in his office in Embu Rwanjau said that the corporation is faced with myriad of challenges ranging from inept management and board members whom he accused of incompetence and failing to address the plight of workers yet they get their allowances without failure
He said that the board is appointed every year making it hard for the growth of the corporations calling for the change of laws guiding appointments of board members adding that the management is bloated where every department has a general manager.
Rwanjau says that Posta Kenya was contracted by the IEBC to distribute election materials across the country but the election body has failed to honor its agreement of paying Sh1 billion
He also noted that Huduma Kenya owes Posta Kenya over Sh1 billion which has accumulated since all Posta offices host Huduma centers where they don’t pay rent, water and electricity bills.
He said that the minister of ICT Eliud Owalo has failed to streamline the operations of the corporation calling on President Ruto to intervene to save Posta from collapsing and also pay its workers.
He has also called on the Parliamentary labour committee headed by Runyenjes Member of Parliament Eric Mucangi Karemba to summon the management and board to shed more light on what is happening at the corporations
He has however challenged Posta Kenya to come up with creative initiatives and innovations so that it can compete well with other courier services companies and make profits.
