Post harvest losses among farmers in Nyandarua drop
Post-harvest losses among fresh vegetable farmers in Nyandarua has reduced by over 90 percent under the Green Horticulture at Lake Naivasha Project (GOALAN).
Under the project that is funded by WWF, the quality and quantity of water flowing into Lake Naivasha has also improved due to the introduction of sustainable farming in the catchment area.
And as the five year programme by the donor funded agency came to an end, the targeted farmers had a reason to smile after getting a market for their produce.
According to WWF programme coordinator in Naivasha landscape Caroline Njiru, the GOALAN project had changed the lives of many farmers in the targeted areas.
Njiru noted that before the project was introduced, the lake’s basin had many challenges including deforestation, water pollution and unsustainable farming.
Njiru noted that 146 farmers had been certified with KS1758 compliance certificate and their produce could access any market as it was grown without any pesticide.
Addressing the press at Sawela Lodge in Naivasha, she said that the beneficiary farmers had been trained on financial management and on integrated pest management.
On his part, William Ojwang also from WWF said that the EU funded project had benefited farmers in Nyandarua, Nakuru and Narok counties.
He noted that the sustainable farming introduced to the farmers included soil testing, limited use of pesticides, efficient use of water and reduced abstraction of water from rivers and boreholes.
One of the beneficiaries Sarah Wairimu from Kinangop in Nyandarua County said that her farm production had increased under the project.
She said that unlike in the past, they could now access markets for their produce adding that the use of pesticides and fertilizer was now a thing of the past.
