Poll: Raila, Ruto in neck and neck race to State House
If elections were held today, who would be the president? Well, with just 90 days to the August 9 General Election, there seems to be no clear answer to this question. Not if the latest opinion poll findings are anything to go by. According to the latest opinion poll, William Ruto and Raila Odinga are now neck and neck with neither candidate possessing a clear majority. In what is shaping up to be a two-horse race, findings from Infotrak Research indicate that the popularity of both candidates is tied at 42%. This is below the constitutional threshold of 50%+1.
The poll that the Nation Media Group commissioned also shows that fewer Kenyans are undecided on who to vote for as President than they were two months ago. The research polled 2,400 respondents across the country on the 8th and 9th of May, 2022. In March this year, ten per cent of those interviewed said they were undecided. While Five per cent declined to answer the question ‘if presidential elections were held today, who would you vote for as the next president of Kenya?’
According to the poll, Ruto’s popularity has grown by 7 per cent in the last two months compared to Raila’s six per cent. It has however grown only eight per cent more since November last year while Raila’s popularity has grown 17 per cent in the intervening six months. The research findings also indicate that Raila overtook Ruto in popularity in December last year. His popularity grew by 8 per cent while Ruto’s declined by two. In March the two were more or less evenly matched with Raila’s popularity at 36 per cent while that of Ruto’s was at 35 per cent. Significantly, the number of undecided voters has dropped from 22 per cent in March to 10 per cent now. Having stood at 24 per cent in November of last year.
