Police seek KBS driver after bus rams into boda boda, kills two in Kilimani

Police are on the hunt for a yet-to-be identified male driver who is allegedly responsible for Monday’s road accident at Argwings Kodhek-Ole Dume junction in Kilmani, Nairobi County, which left two people dead and several others injured.

NTV has learnt that police on Monday wrote to Kenya Bus Service (KBS), the driver’s employer, asking for his details and assistance in apprehending the man.

The incident happened in the morning when a 51-seater bus speeding along Valley Road towards Yaya Centre lost control and rammed into a motorcycle, killing the driver and his pillion passenger instantly.

Witnesses said the bus driver was speeding down the steep stretch of Argwings Kodhek road immediately after leaving Ole Dume and lost control of the vehicle before hitting the motorcycle.

Police reports indicate that the bus’s brakes failed before the driver lost control.

“As a result of the impact, it (the bus) lost control, crashed on the edge of the road where both the rider and the pillion passenger sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot,” the report stated.

The bus was towed to Kilimani police station after crime scene investigators successfully processed the scene, where it will remain until investigations into the accident are completed.

Police spokesperson Resila Onyango told the NTV that the manhunt for the driver was at an advanced stage and that they were confident he would be arrested.

“We are doing everything possible to bring him to book. We have written to the KBS and we are sure it is only a matter of time before we get the suspect who will assist us in our investigations,” she said.

The chairman of the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya, Kevin Mubadi, has condemned the tragic incident and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The accident, he said, has left the boda boda community in “shock and grief” at the tragic loss of its member and his passenger.

“This devastating incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved road safety measures and greater responsibility on the part of all road users… It is imperative that those responsible are held accountable to prevent such tragedies from happening again,” he said.

Mr Mubadi also called on the relevant authorities to take immediate steps to address the dire state of Kenyan roads and put in place measures to ensure that public transport operators strictly adhere to traffic regulations and that all drivers exercise heightened caution on the roads.

“In this time of mourning, we stand united with the families affected and seek justice for those who lost their lives. We urge the community and all stakeholders to support our call for improved road safety and greater respect for the lives of all road users,” he said.

This incident comes against the backdrop of a series of devastating road accidents that have seen an alarming rise in the number of deaths and injuries.

Between 1 August and 6 September, media reports across the country recorded 27 road crashes that claimed 79 lives and left 182 people injured.

In April, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Deputy Director for Safety, Audit and Inspection, Christine Ogut, said the authority had intensified efforts to engage with drivers and matatu saccos, even summoning them for sensitisation sessions on road safety protocols.

“We have identified the lack of speed limiters in vehicles, especially public service vehicles, as a major contributing factor to accidents. Speed is also the leading cause of accidents on our roads, accounting for 70 per cent of accidents,” she said.
