Police say MP Charles Ong’ondo Were killing ‘targeted and premeditated’
Police have said the fatal shooting of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were, by a gunman aboard a motorcycle in the capital Nairobi on Wednesday evening appeared to be targeted and premeditated.
Were was shot dead at around 7:30 pm when his vehicle was stopped at a traffic light on Ngong Road, police said in a statement released late on Wednesday.
According to witnesses, the shooter was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle that stopped alongside the car, police said.
“The pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots at the passenger side before jumping back onto the motorcycle and speeding away,” police said. “The nature of this crime appears to be both targeted and premeditated.”
Political assassinations are unusual in Kenya.
Were was a member of the opposition ODM party led by veteran politician Raila Odinga, who lost to William Ruto in the last election in 2022.
“Were is no more; mercilessly and in cold blood, gunned down by an assassin in Nairobi this evening,” Odinga wrote on X.
Already, investigations have been started to find out the identity of two people who trailed the lawmaker while riding on a motorbike and shot him at close range.
His driver survived the fatal attack.
The gunmen seem to have been so brazen as they dared to commit such a crime on a highway that is known to be well secured and full of CCTV cameras.
Two hours after his shooting, officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were at the crime scene.
After the shooting, he was taken to Nairobi Hospital Accident and Emergency area which was immediately cordoned off. After news of the shooting, a host of MPs, Police Inspector-General Douglas Kanja and DCI Mohamed Amin arrived at Nairobi Hospital. His body has been moved to Lee Funeral Home.
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma said the slain legislator left parliamentary chambers shortly after 8pm. He said the House was still sitting when Suba South MP Millie Odhiambo called and notified him of the incident.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said: “This callous and cowardly act committed under the cover of night has robbed the nation of a distinguished legislator, a fearless advocate for his constituents, and a man deeply committed to the democratic ideals and service to the people he represented.”
