Police officer arrested for allegedly demanding KES 10,000 from boda-boda operator
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) says it has arrested a police officer in Meru county for allegedly demanding a bribe of KES 10, 000 from a boda-boda rider after confiscating his motorcycle.
George Waweru Kagia, an officer stationed at Mutuati Police Station in Igembe North sub-county was arrested after a complaint was made by the boda-boda rider for unlawful confiscation of his bike.
EACC says that according to the rider, he was stopped by police officers at the Kongoitime area while riding from Mutuati market, demanding he produces documentation proving the ownership of his motorbike.
Unable to provide his documents, since he didn’t have them on him at that moment, the officers proceeded to confiscate his bike.
“The Complainant alleges that on the same day, he presented a Sale Agreement of the motorcycle to one Police Officer No. 54506 George Waweru Kagia but the Officer said the agreement was not genuine and proceeded to demand a bribe of KES10,000 in order to release the motorcycle. The Complainant said that being unable to raise the KES 10,000, he reported the matter to EACC for intervention,” EACC reports.
The officer was arrested on Thursday 15 June following investigations into the complaint that was received on 7 June.
The officer was processed at Ruiru police station and later released on a cash bail oh KES 20, 000.
