Police identify suspect in Odinga’s bodyguard shooting, probe ongoing
Police have identified the suspected shooter of cop Barack Onyango Odour, Ida Odinga’s bodyguard.
In a statement of Frida, the National Police Service named Collins Okundi, as the suspected assailant on the run but is being pursued.
“The National Police Service confirms an incident that resulted in the death of a police officer who was shot dead in Kisumu in cold blood. The incident is under active investigations. The assailant, identified as Collins Okundi, and who’s on the run is being pursued,” NPS said.
The suspected shooter reportedly fled the scene with the firearm that he robbed from the slain officer.
“A second victim also shot by the assailant is in a local hospital receiving treatment. As we appeal for information to aid in his arrest, members of the public are equally cautioned to treat the suspect as armed and dangerous,” the police body said.
Collins Okundi was shot dead at around 3:30am on Friday, October 14 at his Riat home in Kisumu West Sub-County, which is located near Odinga’s residence.
The guard is said to have been heading home from a night out at an entertainment joint called Dondez Bar & Restaurant in the company of two friends, a man, and a woman.
According to witnesses, trouble began when a man said to be the manager of the local club confronted Oduor as the three-headed home. It is not yet clear what the dispute was about.
According to police, the man shot Ida’s bodyguard twice, once in the head and once in the leg. In the ensuing brawl, he also hurt the male companion of Oduor. He was taken urgently to the Aga Khan Hospital for treatment, and his condition is stable.
The body of the security guard has since been moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary as investigations into the incident continue.
