Police budget must be used prudently says Ruto
President William Ruto has called on Inspector General of police, Japheth Koome, to ensure that every coin budgeted for the police is used for the betterment of the force.
The president made these remarks while presiding over the 49th passing out parade of 991 General Service Unit (GSU) officers at the National Police College Embakasi B.
According to the president, the decision to move the budget to the office of the Inspector General was to curtail political involvement in policing matters.
“I did not move the police budget from the Office of the President to the Office of the Inspector General for the money to be stolen by corrupt individuals,” he said.
Ruto added, “Take care. There at the procurement office is where the devil of corruption lives.”
President Ruto also called upon the new recruits to embrace one another and be at the forefront of stemming tribalism in the country. He urged the new officers to serve Kenyans with dignity and respect.
“From today, you are ambassadors of the National Police Service tasked with giving a good account to Kenyans wherever you go and living up to the highest ideals of policing as a noble profession,” said Ruto.
National Treasury in September last year designated the Inspector General of Police the accounting officer for the National Police Service following an executive directive by President William Ruto.
The police will now have financial freedom with the IG now in charge of the financial management of the service. Under the new designation, the IG will be required to report to the CS Ministry of Interior on all financial matters regarding the police service.
Ruto also presided over the Administration Police Passing out Parade at Embakasi. More than 1,995 administration police officers graduated from a training programme.
He stressed that his administration will work to improve the conditions of the police service.
“We are serious about investing in enhanced recruitment, training, and skills, equipment, and technology conditions of service and welfare as well as health and well-being of our officers,” he said.
