Photos: Four world-class stadia KDF expected to deliver by 2025
The Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts, Cabinet Secretary (CS), Ababu Namwamba, yesterday handed over four stadiums to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for upgrading to international standards as the country joins its East African neighbors in the Pamoja Bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on September 19.
CS Ababu said yesterday that the ministry has set a deadline of 2025 for the completion of the four facilities.
“Today, we formally start the exciting journey of rolling out our revolutionary Sports & Arts Infrastructure Masterplan (SAIM). Segment I of SAIM is to give Kenya truly international stadia, with a new Talanta Stadium and significantly remodeled Nyayo, Kasarani, and Kipchoge Keino,” CS Ababu shared via X.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is expected to manage the renovation and development of the four stadiums in preparation for the announcement of the countries that will host the 2027 Afcon.
Speaking to NTV Cs Namwamba said that the decision is part of the government’s plan to complete the stadia before the Confederation of African Football (CAF’s) announcement on the host of the 2027 African Cup of Nations by 2025
The choice to assign the renovation and construction of these stadiums to the KDF is a result of their impressive accomplishment in completing the 10,000-seater Ulinzi Sports Complex within an exceptionally short timeframe, having commenced the project in October 2022.
Kenya is bidding to co-host the football championship with Uganda and Tanzania. There are also individual bids from Algeria, Botswana, and Egypt.
“It would be a great honor to host Afcon in partnership with our neighbors and even if we don’t make it through, plans are in place to renovate our stadiums,” said Namwamba, while speaking to NTV.
The bid, valued at approximately Sh335.7 billion, has garnered full backing from all three football federations, each committing to provide about Sh147 million towards the project. The Confederation of African Football has advised that the funds be deposited by January 2025.
Speaking on NTV’s Kigoda Chako show hosted by Fredrick Muitiri, Ababu Namwamba said he’s sure the Pamoja Bid will be acknowledged by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“I believe our bid to host Afcon alongside Uganda and Tanzania is going to be successful,” Ababu stated.
Namwamba said he had instructed Sports Kenya, which manages the country’s sports stadia, not to allow any non-sporting functions at the stadium.
