‘Persevere through hard economic times, its a transition time’: North Rift leaders plead with Kenyans
A section of leaders from the North Rift region have urged Kenyans to persevere through the hard economic times witnessed in the country citing that the Kenya Kwanza Government is still in the transition period after taking over from the former regime.
The leaders, who are optimistic of better times ahead, noted that things will be okay with President Ruto’s first financial budget in place.
They said the current administration is deploying all measures within its power to address the challenges Kenya faces today to foster a resilient and inclusive economic recovery that protects the livelihoods of Kenyans.
“The government is working hard to correct the wrongs of the previous regime and make life bearable for ordinary Kenyans. The government is working on a recovery strategy,” said West Pokot senator Julius Murgor.
Murgor pointed out that the new government found the economy in a bad state and has been trying to resuscitate it.
“Life is hard and nobody has dismissed it. One tin of maize is KES 200. Kenya Kwanza took over power when life was hard and prices of commodities higher,” he said.
Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto defended the Finance Bill 2023 saying it is Kenya Kwanza’s intervention instrument to alleviate people’s suffering.
“This is a transition period and even the time of Moi and Kibaki was the same. We are still using former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s budget. Ruto’s budget will come in June and he should not be blamed. Let’s give him time and things will be okay. Kenyan employees should embrace the president and listen to his pleas,” he said.
He said that the proposed three percent financial bill can be amended.
“We have 15 clauses in the bill and we will make some amendments. We will discuss the issues and rectify where necessary. Some things can wait but some people are opposing everything. Not everything is bad .We MPs don’t have salaries because everything goes to mortgage. I took a loan and my pay slip is zero. We only depend mileage but it takes time hence it forces one to sell goats to move,” he said.
Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment Lillian Tomitom called on Kenyans to pray for the government and the country.
“When President Ruto entered Government, maize flour was KES 240 and it is slowly going down. The president is working hard,” she said.
She attributed the high cost of living to misplaced priorities by the previous regime.
The leaders spoke in Kacheliba during a meeting.
