Paul Wainaina reinstated as Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor
Prof. Paul Wainaina was on Thursday reinstated as Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor, the institution has confirmed.
Wainaina stormed the school today accompanied by hundreds of students and officials.
“I’m back and we will handle the issues that made me go away,” Paul Wainaina said in his comeback speech.
Wainaina’s return comes after parties involved in a dispute that led to his exit signed a consent to withdraw court cases.
Wainaina’s removal from office
The vice chancellor was removed from office on July 12 as a result of a disagreement he had with the university council and State House regarding the division of university property for use by the Kamae squatters as well as the Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) to establish a World Health Organization logistics hub.
He had previously been suspended for 30 days pending investigations into claims of alleged misconduct, but court cases that had been filed delayed the resolution of the situation.
In order to facilitate the transfer of the land, the council was also disbanded and a new one was appointed. The plan, however, was derailed by ensuing legal disputes and the general election.
Since Prof. Wainaina was suspended, Prof. Waceke Wanjohi has been serving as acting VC. Former VC of the University of Nairobi Crispus Kiamba serves as the chairman of the new council.
Wainaina was also appointed by President William Ruto to the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, which has been gathering public opinion on issues relating to education.
