Parliament calls for public views on IG nominee Japhet Koome
Kenyans have 10 days to submit their views on the suitability of the Inspector General of Police nominee Japhet Koome.
In a gazette notice to the public, the National Assembly Clerk Serah Kioko said interested members of the public can submit their presentations ahead of a vetting process by a joint team comprising the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Affairs and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations.
Koome is set to face the House committees on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.
The notice read in part, “In accordance with section 6 (9) of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, 2011, the Committees now invite interested members of the public to submit any representations, by 0 written statements on oath (affidavits), with supporting evidence, on the suitability of the nominee for appointment to office.”
The announcement states that you may send the Clerk of the National Assembly your opinions in writing along with any supporting documentation if you are interested.
“The presentations may be forwarded to the Clerk of the National Assembly or the Clerk of Senate, P.O. Box 41842-00100, Nairobi; hand delivered to the Offices of the Clerks, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi; or emailed to clerk.nationalassembly@parliament.go.ke and clerk.senate@parliament.go.ke,” the noticed said, adding they would need to be received by Thursday November 3 at 5pm, five days before Koome’s grilling session.
Following his nomination on September 29 to succeed departing IG Hilary Mutyambai, who went on terminal leave due to health reasons, Koome’s name was sent to Parliament for review by President Ruto last week.
