Parents from pastoral communities urged to ‘release’ girls to grab opportunities
Parents from the pastoralist communities have been urged to avoid “clipping girls’ wings” by overprotecting them, and instead support them to go all out and pursue their education.
Addressing members of public at Kinna in Garbatula sub-county on Wednesday during celebrations to mark International Women’s Day, the Projects Coordinator for Africa-Led Movement to end FGM and ActionAid Kenya, Dirham Duba, noted that the notion among many parents that if girls are given the freedom they will get early pregnancies was misleading.
She said the restriction only served to deny the girl child the much-needed exposure and ability to grab opportunities that are available to succeed in Life.
She noted that some parents only want their girls to stay close to home so that they keep an eye on them, and go to the extent of even denying them the opportunity to attend schools that are far away from their home village for fear that they will “get spoilt” and get pregnant before they get married.
Dirham said that there are many girls from the pastoralist communities including herself who have studied even in foreign countries and made it without getting pregnant, adding that young girls have the ability to achieve a lot in life if their parents and the society at large don’t clip their wings, and allows them to go out and compete for available opportunities.
Isiolo Deputy Governor’s Spouse Christine Lowasa advised women to utilize the opportunities that have been availed to them by the government, and shun from complaining that the same government has sidelined them when they stay idle and expect to benefit from the various programs, without making an effort.
Isiolo Human Rights Defenders coordinator Ibrahim Waqo called upon the county government administration to consider establishing a rescue center for girls, arguing that domestic violence, female genital mutilation and early marriages were still being reported in the county. Still, a safe house for victims was lacking.
