Palestinian flag explodes when Israeli man tries to remove it
A Palestinian flag exploded when an Israeli man tried to remove it in a field near a West Bank road as was seen in a video released on Sunday (April 21).
Israeli Ynet news website reported that the man, Israel Levy, was lightly wounded by the explosion and quoted him as saying that he was lucky as the explosive was buried in the ground and exploded to his side and not directly at him.
A woman who seemed to be filming the incident from a car’s passenger seat could be heard saying that “We went to take down this ugly rag of the state that does not exist.”
Reuters was able to confirm the location from the telegraph pole, trees and shape of the mountains which matched file and satellite imagery of the area. Reuters was not able to independently confirm the date the video was filmed.
West Bank violence has been on the rise for months, with the lastest being an Israeli raid into Tulkarm that killed 14 Palestinians during the weekend and an early Sunday attempted attack by Palestinian assailants.
The two Palestinian attackers tried to shoot and stab Israeli soldiers and the soldiers responded with live fire, the military said.
The West Bank and Gaza, territories Israel captured in a 1967 war, are among the lands the Palestinians seek for an independent state. U.S.-brokered peace talks broke down a decade ago.
Violence in the West Bank was already surging before the Gaza war began in October – fuelling further bloodshed in the territory.
Settler violence is a source of growing concern among Israel’s Western allies. A number of countries, including the United States, have imposed sanctions on violent settlers and urged Israel to do more to stop the violence.
