Ogolla and Jonah Mwangi sworn in as CDF and vice CDF

General Francis Ogolla and Lt. General Jonah Mwangi have been sworn in as the new Chief of the Defense Forces (CDF) and Vice CDF respectively.

Ogolla now replaces his boss General Robert Kibochi who has retired.

Speaking on Saturday morning when he presided over the event, President William Ruto recognised Ogolla’s exemplary service in the military and congratulated him for ascending to the highest office in the docket.

“You have my confidence and the confidence of the Kenyan government,” Ruto said.

Prior to his promotion and appointment Friday afternoon, Lt. General Ogolla was the Vice CDF.

Until his promotion and appointment, Mwangi was the vice chancellor of, National Defense University-Kenya.

The two are in the list of changes announced by President Ruto following the recommendation of the National Defence Council (NDC) chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale, effectively ending Kibochi’s 44-year illustrious career.

“Further, on advise of the defense council, chaired by Duale, which met today, the president upheld the defense council’s recommendations and made promotions, postings and appointments of KDF officers,” reads the statement by the Director Public Communications, Bongita Ongeri.

The NDC discussed the succession in the military due to the impending retirement of Gen. Kibochi, in strict compliance with the military doctrines which have been practiced since 2000.

According to the Tonje Rules, the CDF shall retire having served a single term of four years or upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 62, whichever comes first.

The post is rotational among all the services, Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and the Kenya Air Force.

The latest changes now put to rest the anxiety that has dodged the institution for months, over the leadership succession.

Gen. Kibochi is a seasoned member of the Signal corps from the Kenya Army, who succeeded retired Gen Samson Mwathethe from the Kenya Navy, having proceeded Gen. Julius Karangi of the Air Force.

This means that the next in line to succeed Kibochi was set to be from the Kenya Navy unless, President Ruto decided to ignore the tradition and settle on someone from the other service.

Gen. Ogolla whose retirement was due in eight months will now service for two years instead of exiting the force.

Ogolla has for the last few months had a run in with the Kenya Kwanza administration after he was mentioned in the controversial happening at the Bomas of Kenya in regards to the 2022 General Elections.

He was faulted after the former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati and the ex-commissioners Prof. Abdi Guliye and Moya Bolu claimed he visited Bomas of Kenya and allegedly demanded interference with the presidential results.

Lt. General Mohammed Badi previously of the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) was also a possible candidate to replace Kibochi as he is also from the Kenya Air Force.

If Ruto would have opted to send both Badi and Ogolla to retirement, the other option would have been the current Air Force Service Commander, Maj General John Omenda, who would have been promote to Lt General and then appointment as VCDF, extend Kibochi’s term for one year and later appoint him CDF.

Ogolla is a graduate of EcoleMilitaire de Paris and the NDC of Kenya.

Other changes include Maj General Said Farah who takes over from Lt General Mwangi, while Maj General David Kiamiyo Tarus has been appointed deputy commander Kenya Army and Maj General William Shume takes over the border security command.

Maj Gen Alphaxard Kiugu now takes over from Maj Gen Jeff Nyaga as the forces commander of East Africa Community Regional Force in Eastern Congo.

Nyaga has been named the general officer western command while Maj Gen Eric Kinuthia is the new senior directing staff Air National Defence College.

The immediate former Military intelligence director Maj Gen Said Mohammed Farah has been moved to the National Defence College as vice chancellor while Brig Yahya Abdi has been appointed the deputy commander of the Kenya Navy.

The council’s recommendation also saw Brig David Keter promoted to Maj Gen and appointed assistant CDF personnel and logistics while Brig Stephen Mutuku has been promoted to the rank of Maj Gen and named senior directing staff army at NDC.

Others include Brig. John Koimo who has been promoted to Maj Gen and named commander joint command staff college alongside Brig Abdulkadir Burje who has been named the director of military intelligence.

Brig Paul Owuor Otieno has been promoted to Maj Gen and named the Managing Director of Kenya Shipyards Limited while Col Antony Rotich has been promoted to the rank of Brig and named commander military intelligence corps.

Col Alfred Gitonga is the new Military coordination centre after he was promoted to Brigadier.
