Kenyan presidents breaking protocol and taking the wheel
The story of Kenyan presidents defying protocol and taking the wheel themselves is rather unconventional. Normally, for security reasons, heads of state are chauffeur-driven and flanked by bodyguards whenever they appear in public. However, there have been instances where Kenyan presidents have broken with tradition and opted to drive themselves on public occasions.
President Ruto, for example, has been seen driving himself to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) since the start of the Africa Climate Summit on Monday 6 September.
Each day of the summit, he made a public statement by driving a Yellow Autopax Av Yetu electric car. Through out the time, his motorcade was a departure from the norm, as all the cars and motorcycles accompanying him were also electric.
His predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, also challenged convention during his time in office. In February 2020, Uhuru surprised Kenyans when he took the wheel of his own vehicle and drove from State House to Nyayo Stadium to inspect preparations for the memorial service for the late President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.
In May last year, Uhuru yet again chose to personally drive a Mercedes G Wagon to the Kenya Defence Forces Museum Air Show Festival at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi. He was accompanied by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Mohammed Ali in a seven-car motorcade.
Even the late President Kibaki is said to have adopted this unorthodox practice. According to his former driver, Timothy Koima, in an interview with a media outlet last year, Kibaki would occasionally choose to take the wheel on arrival at the airport rather than wait for his official escort.
The act of Kenyan presidents driving themselves is often interpreted by many as a symbol of humility. Some see it as a form of leading by example.
