ODM cracks the whip: Jalang’o, Tom Ojienda and 3 others kicked out of party
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has expelled five Members of Parliament (MPs) as it cracks the whip on defectors.
Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Felix Odiwuor, alias Jalang’o (Langata), and Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda have been kicked out of the party.
The party said the resolution was arrived at during a National Executive Committee of the party held on Wednesday under the leadership of Party leader Raila Odinga.
ODM Chairman John Mbadi said the MPs had openly associated with President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza Party.
He added that the expelled MPs had also opposed lawful decisions and resolutions made by the party, contrary to Article 11 of the ODM constitution.
The ODM party is thus directed to commence their removal from the party register.
“The members are deemed to have resigned from the ODM, and the party is hereby directed to commence the process of removing them from the register of ODM,” Mbadi said.
During the briefing, Mbadi further announced that MPs Mark Nyamita (Uriri) and Paul Abuor (Rongo) should offer an apology to the party and pay a Sh1 million fine.
Mbadi said that Nyamita and Abuor appeared before the Disciplinary Committee in person and offered explanations that were considered by the committee, hence they were spared from expulsion.
The report of the Disciplinary Committee, which was looking into the conduct of some members of the party, also recommended the revocation of the nominations of four Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) of Kisumu for gross misconduct.
The four MCAs are Caroline Opar, Kennedy Ajwang’, Peter Obaso, and Regina Kizito.
MP Felix Oduor, alias Jalang’o, had insisted that he would not leave the party that sponsored him to parliament.
“I have never had any serious differences with Baba (Raila), I love Baba so much, a political member, father figure, and everything. I have never wronged him, and I have never left the ODM party, and I never will,” Jalang’o said.
Jalang’o added that he would appeal for his position in the party even if the case went all the way to the Supreme Court.
