Nzoia sugar chairman: Corrupt staff sinking company in debt

Nzoia Sugar Company board chairman Alfred Khang’ati has said that corruption has been eating down the company’s growth over the recent years, putting the company in a debt bed.

The Former Kanduyi legislator who was appointed the board chair of the struggling sugar mill by the Kenya Kwanza government said anyone found capable will face the full wrath of the law.

Khang’ati pointed out that 70 percent of the activities done by a section of the staff are aimed at befalling Nzoia.

“The two months I have been in office it has been time to do ground checking to identify why Nzoia never grew despite the government injecting funds and I have noted that it is a result of corruption by a section of the staffs,” Khang’ati noted.

He added, “If I stand here and say that I don’t know what is befalling Nzoia then I will be lying, the truth of the matter is that there is corruption at Nzoia,”

To revive Nzoia Sugar Company, Khang’ati called on all leaders to collaborate and ensure that the Kenya Kwanza mantra is fulfilled, adding that if the factory is revived it will offer employment opportunities for the many jobless youths in the region.

Khang’ati, however, urged farmers to trust and supply their cane at Nzoia sugar, decrying high numbers of cane to the private factories in the region.

“I know there is a delay in the payment but I want us to trust Nzoia and supply canes, I have always engaged the managing director to try his level best to pay farmers’ arrears,” he said.

Khang’ati warned residents against taking advantage of the unplanted nuclear land to graze their animals, saying that the nuclear land is purposely to grow sugar cane.

On his part, Leonard Yegon, Vice Chairperson Agriculture Committee in the national assembly noted that the assembly has taken over the sugar bill that was previously sponsored by former Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi.

“The sugar bill has passed several stages. We are waiting to finalize it so it benefits the farmer, under the leadership of Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wagwe,” Yegon added.

Yegon said that through the Sugar Bill, of 2022, the lawmakers are seeking to reinstate the board’s independence which was lost during the repeal of the Crops Act.

Kanduyi MP John Makali says he will lead from the front to ensure that Nzoia debts are cleared.

Bungoma governor Ken Lusaka who was present affirmed that he will in the middle of the conversation by both the county leaders and the President to ensure that his new factory installation pledge is fulfilled.

“Since President assumed office, we have had many engagements aimed at transforming the sugar sector therefore I’m calling for concerted efforts to revive Nzoia sugar,” Governor Lusaka said.

Bungoma senator Hon David Wafula Wakoli, led Bungoma county leaders last week, in affirming their support of the revival of Nzoia Sugar Company, saying all that the mill needs is a new machiné, and a waiver on all debts amounting to close to 53 billion Kenyan shillings, paying off farmers and workers and an appointment of a permanent managing director.
