Notable deaths of 2022

A look back at some of the figures to who we said farewell this year.

  1. Mwai Kibaki – Former President, 90

Kenya’s third President Mwai Kibaki died on Friday, April 22 after a long illness. He served as president from 2002 to 2013. He was preceded by Daniel Arap Moi, who died in 2020, and Jomo Kenyatta, who died in 1978.

Kibaki was a university professor, a lawmaker, a cabinet minister, vice president and leader of the opposition before ascending to the highest office in the land in 2002.

He was known as a scholarly and cerebral figure in academia. The late President managed to maneuver in the political sphere for five decades, becoming an establishment insider whose election ended decades of one-party rule.

Kibaki is still remembered as a great economist.

     2. Queen Elizabeth II – Queen of England, 96,

The world’s second-longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, succumbed to her illness on September 8, according to Buckingham Palace communication.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the palace said in a statement.

Queen Elizabeth II served for more than 70 years.

     3. Maina Olwenya – Celebrated actor, 34

The Nairobi Half Life film actor Maina Olwenya passed away on July 4 after collapsing.

A post-mortem found he succumbed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle becomes thickened, complicating blood pumping.

Olwenya, who played Oti in the 2012 Nairobi Hal Life film, also worked as a voice-over artist in various adverts.

He was also the station ID for Radio Jambo, a constituent radio station owned by Radio Africa Limited.

      4. Arshad Shariff – Pakistani journalist, 49

The murder of a senior Pakistani journalist in Kenya took social media by storm on October 23.

According to official reports, Sharif had “compelling reasons to leave Pakistan due to the criminal cases registered against him in different districts.” Sharif who was critical of Pakistan’s army and was on the run was killed when police shot at his car on October 23, 2022.

A team of Pakistani investigators has concluded that the killing of journalist Arshad Sharif in Kajiado County was a “planned assassination”.

The Kenya Police had in its initial statement claimed the shooting was a case of mistaken identity that happened as they searched for a car that was involved in an abduction.

Even so, several emerging twists in the case have got people suspecting otherwise.

      4. Steve Chege – Former Laikipia Senator aspirant, 30

On October 31, Former Laikipia Senator aspirant Steve Chege was pronounced dead after a greasy accident.

The aspiring politician died at a hospital while receiving treatment.

The news of the accident had been shared by Philanthropist and activist Ndungu Nyoro.

     5. Takeoff – Rapper, 28

Takeoff, a member of the hip-hop trio Migos, was shot to death on November 1 during a dispute outside of a private party in Houston Texas.

According to Houston police reports, the rapper was an “innocent bystander” to an argument that lead to the shooting.

Two people have so far been arrested and charged over the incident, which was officially ruled a homicide.

Takeoff, whose real name was Kirsnick Khari Ball was at a private party with fellow Migos rapper Quavo when an altercation broke out. Quavo, 31, was not injured in the incident.

7. Tshala Muana – Congolese musician, 64

On December 10, the world lost a talented Congolese singer famed for the hit song Karibu Yangu.

The superstar is famed for her supple voice and sensual dance moves to songs about women’s dignity and social issues.

She died in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo according to an announcement on Facebook by her producer and husband, Claude Mashala. He did not cite a cause of death.

In a lovely tribute, Claude Mashala revealed that the singer died in the wee hours of the morning of Saturday, December 10.

In 2020, Muana had a stroke and diabetes and hypertension.

8. Coolio – Rapper, 59

Coolio died on September 28 while at a friend’s house in Los Angeles, California. He was discovered unresponsive on a bathroom floor. He was pronounced dead by first responders.

The Grammy award-winning rapper is most famous for his hit song Gangsta’s Paradise.

He is termed an icon of 90s rap.
