North Rift leaders embark on drumming up support for the finance bill

A section of leaders from the North Rift region have embarked on drumming up support for the Finance Bill 2023 following the reading on Thursday.

The leaders say the bill should not be reduced to the housing and fuel levies by those against it citing that it has many benefits for Kenyans.

Led by Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong the leaders said that they will conduct a series of meetings in the region to give residents a better understanding of the controversial bill.

Speaking on Friday during the handing over of a school bus courtesy of the Sigor Constituency Development Fund (CDF) at Father Leo Staples, the leaders defended those who voted for the bill saying it will help Kenyans in the near future.

“Let those against oppose but in the future when the economy of the Country will stabilise all Kenyans will enjoy. This is like independence where few people fought for but now all people are enjoying,” said Lochakapong.

The legislature pointed out that in the Kenya kwanza budget and proposals are good for Kenyans.

“Those opposed are not mentioning the good things in the bill. School feeding program has five billion shillings and we need food in schools. The roads like Marich to Kabas, Sigor to Solion, need money which will come from the finance bill. Those who will be affected by human wildlife conflict have 1.1 billion shillings, 600 billion shillings will go to education to help in putting up infrastructure and pay teachers in schools,” he said.

The MP asked Kenyans to have faith in the bill and be patriotic.

“This time round we shall get it right. Hustler and Constituency Development funds CDF funds will increase by ten billion shillings. This will make us get like 20 million shillings in Sigor. Those on pay slips are the ones cheating you to oppose it,” he said.

Mr Lochakapong stressed that there is nowhere else to get funds for development apart from Kenyans paying taxes to fund the budget.

“The bill will help the country pick off economically and that is why we passed it all .Many people believe in President Ruto and all his proposals,” he said.

He castigated a few leaders from the region who opposed the bill accusing them of being behind creating the huge public debts affecting the country now.

“They misused funds for roads. They don’t want us to pay their debt; they want to do that so that they can say that the Kenya Kwanza government is unable to govern. They don’t want the Government to pay the debt they created. Six out of ten shillings collected as tax goes to pay debts .It was okay during their time but not now. This is not the animal farm where others are more equal than others,” he said.

He pointed out that the Kenya Kwanza Government will not condone corruption.

“President Ruto said he will take personal responsibility and anyone stealing funds and face severe consequences,” he said.

West Pokot County has four constituencies where three MPs, Peter Lochakapong (Sigor,UDA) Samuel Moroto (Kapenguria-UDA),Titus Lotee (Kacheliba(KUP) voted yes. West Pokot women representative Rael Kasiwai (KUP) voted Yes while Pokot South MP, David Pkosing (KUP) voted no for the bill.
