No protests allowed in President Ruto’s backyard: Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii asserts
Uasin Gishu, Governor Jonathan Bii has stated that the Azimio protests would not be permitted in President William Ruto’s stronghold next week on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
During a church service, the governor emphasized that the Azimio leaders were deceiving Kenyans by promising peaceful demonstrations while people were losing their lives.
“In Eldoret, President Ruto’s hometown, and Uasin Gishu, we will not allow those demonstrations to take place,” Bii asserted.
The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition has scheduled the third wave of anti-government demonstrations for next week, spanning three days – Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
The coalition claims that these changes were made in response to public requests, reflecting their concerns about the Finance Act 2023 and the high cost of living.
Unlike previous protests, the Wednesday, July 12 “maandamanos” included protesters from naturally peaceful regions such as Emali, Makueni, Kitengela, Machakos, and some parts of Nakuru.
The government, under President William Ruto’s leadership, has condemned the protests, citing the destruction of property and loss of lives they have caused.
“We will not tolerate any more violent demonstrations in the Republic of Kenya. Those who wish to try should go ahead. I’ve heard some say they will persist; we are prepared,” stated Cabinet Secretary for Interior Security, Abraham Kithure Kindike, in response to the same.
