‘No Handshake’: Ruto says he will talk with Raila on how Azimio will work as opposition
President-Elect William Ruto has said that he would call both President Uhuru Kenyatta and Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga. He said he was still friends with Uhuru who chose to support Raila and he would want to discuss with the former PM how Azimio will work as the opposition.
“I will shortly be calling President Uhuru Kenyatta… I haven’t talked to him in months… so we can have a conversation on the process of transition… we will remain friends. I will also call Raila Odinga and the Azimio team in order to contextualize how we will work for the people of Kenya. I do not believe in the handshake stories… I believe in an accountable government held to account by the opposition,” Ruto said.
Ruto who was reacting to the Supreme Court judgment on Monday said that the Kenya Kwanza administration would treat both leaders with dignity as they retire. He added that he would start working with the public service to ensure that there is a smooth transition aligned to the Kenya Kwanza agenda.
“I want our competitors to rest assured that nobody will be prosecuted for holding a contrary political view from ours. We will respect President Uhuru Kenyatta in his retirement, we are honourable people, we are not petty, and he will have his place in the history of Kenya,” Ruto said.
The DP also said that there were many people in Azimio who did not want to be in Azimio and they must now plan for the future without instruments of blackmail, threats, and intimidation.
“This marks the end of the politics of deceit, betrayal, and conmanship… The criminal justice system will never again be used against those who hold contrary political views,” Ruto said.
