NMG changes its editorial structure as it gears up for an audience-led operation
The Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced a number of changes in its editorial leadership as it transitions to an audience-led digital-first operation.
NMG has so far accomplished major milestones such as redesigning its newsroom structure and setting up two Content Hubs; Sports and Politics.
The leading media house is now entering the definitive phase of implementing the full newsroom integration and the recasting of its content strategy.
Subsequently, the Group’s Editorial Director Joe Ageyo announced six major appointments to shepherd the Group’s transition and lead the new structure and ways of working.
From the changes, current Daily Nation’s Executive Editor Pamella Sitoni has been appointed to the role of Group Managing Editor. The accomplished journalist will oversee NMG’s editorial strategy and ensure alignment of content across all print, broadcast and digital platforms.
Benard Mwinzi, currently the Managing Editor, Value Added Content is now the Managing Editor, of Content Hubs. In this newly created role, Mwinzi will be leading a team of subject experts to generate the highest quality multimedia content within various hubs.
Seasoned Multimedia Editor Oliver Mathenge has been appointed Managing Editor, Audiences and Engagement.
Oliver will oversee the digital publishing and social strategy for the NMG brands as well as deepen audience focus and insight sharing in the integrated newsroom.
James Smart, who has been instrumental in the growth of NMG podcasts as the Podcast Editor has been appointed the Managing editor -Newsroom production.
Smart, who is also an anchor and host of the popular NTV Show With All Due Respect (#WADR), will be charged with leading a diverse range of production teams to deliver high-quality output across all NMG platforms and brands.
Current Weekends Managing Editor Washington Gikunju has been appointed as the Managing Editor – Planning and Newsdesk. He will oversee the setting up of the Centralised News Desk and guide the delivery of daily breaking news and forward planning.
Elias Makori who is currently in charge of sports coverage in the Group has been appointed Lead Editor, Sports and Integration projects.
The veteran journalist who recently celebrated 30 years of service at the Nation Media Group will maintain his role at the sports docket. In addition, he will spearhead various initiatives related to the Newsroom integration project, across the NMG products and platforms within the East African region.
Makori, who is the longest-serving NMG staffer, has been instrumental in helping the Group achieve various editorial and commercial milestones.
