NMG announces changes to its editorial leadership
The Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced new changes in its editorial leadership as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its audience-led, digital-first operations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
In a memo to editorial staff last Thursday, Editor-in-Chief Joe Ageyo outlined the restructuring of newsroom leadership, including the introduction of new roles and the renaming of some.
The changes aim to accelerate digital innovation and enhance audience engagement across all platforms. A key highlight is the creation of the position of Executive Editor for Digital Innovation, to spearhead the group’s digital strategy and coordinate content initiatives across newsrooms in the three countries.
The role will be filled by Victor Mushi, who previously served as the Executive Editor in charge of the Content Team in Tanzania.
Mr Mushi will remain in Tanzania, from where he will oversee digital innovation regionally.
Meanwhile, the position of Managing Editor, Audience and Engagement has been abolished.
Responsibilities formerly under this docket have been redistributed across other workstreams to ensure audience focus is embedded throughout the newsroom.
The Managing Editor, Production has been renamed Managing Editor, Broadcast and New Media, while the Managing Editor, Content Hubs is now titled Managing Editor, Content Strategy. A new editorial hub, Climate and Young Audiences, has also been created, underscoring NMG’s strategic move to champion youth-centred journalism by focusing on one of the most pressing global issues: climate change.
Streamline publishing workflows
“To consolidate the publishing workflows for our print outlets and their respective websites, the position of Managing Editor, Publishing has been created. This means each Lead Editor will be in charge of both print and digital versions of respective brands and will report to the Managing Editor, Publishing,” Mr Ageyo said.
The Publishing Managing Editor will streamline publishing workflows for print outlets and their corresponding websites.
Under this structure, each Lead Editor will report directly to the Publishing Managing Editor. Washington Gikunju, formerly the Managing Editor, Planning and Content Hubs, has been appointed to this new role.
Harry Misiko, a Chevening Scholar and alumnus of City, University of London, and The Aga Khan University, Nairobi, has been promoted from Lead Editor, News Desk, to Managing Editor, Content Strategy. The Alfred Friendly Fellow, USA, will oversee Content Hubs and the News Desk.
James Smart, a Chevening Scholar and alumnus of Cardiff University as well as NTV anchor, has been named Managing Editor, Broadcast and New Media.
Previously the Managing Editor, Production and Partnerships, Smart has played a pivotal role in the growth of NMG’s podcast segment. In his new role, he will focus on accelerating video content creation and expanding new formats across the newsroom.
Alex Ndegwa assumes the consolidated role of Lead Editor, Daily Nation (Print and Digital), while Mike Owuor becomes Lead Editor, Weekend.
Jackson Mutinda is the Lead Editor, The East African, taking charge of both print and digital versions, while Caroline Njung’e, formerly Chief Production Editor, is now Chief Quality Editor and will oversee quality assurance for content across all platforms.
John Kiplagat, previously Lead Editor, Print, will now serve as Lead Editor, Production.
Zeynab Wandati has been appointed Editor, Climate and Young Audiences, while Dorcas Odumbe, formerly Gender Editor, becomes Editor for Health and Gender.
Integrated News Desk
Kennedy Kimanthi, who was the South Rift Regional Editor and has previously been in charge of Coast and Central bureaus, has been transferred to Nairobi to become News Editor at the Integrated News Desk.
Kimanthi will be replaced in Nakuru by NTV journalist Brygettes Ngana who has been with the Sustainability Hub. Patrick Langat, previously Weekend Editor, is now the Weekend and Planning Editor.
Mr Ageyo said the changes are necessary to keep pace with evolving media and content. “As the content landscape rapidly evolves, our newsroom will continue to respond appropriately by constantly evaluating our structures and making adjustments,” he said. “I urge you to join me in congratulating our colleagues who are taking up new roles. Let us accord them utmost cooperation as we accelerate the transformation of our newsroom.”
