Ngara raid mix-up: Did police arrest the wrong ‘Mathe’?

From the start, there were rumours that the police had arrested the wrong woman in the Mathe wa Ngara drug syndicate.

Hours after recovering over Sh12 million in a drug bust, the arrest of Teresiah Wanjiru has put the police on the spot.

Sheila Waithera cleans the last utensils at her mother’s food stall. The utensils were used two days ago before her mother was picked up by police. Sheila was taking a break from work when she saw her mother being dragged off the premises.

In the raid, which resulted in the recovery of 26 bags of bhang and 4 cartons of rolling material, it now appears that the police may have arrested the wrong peddler.

National Intelligence Service (NIS) files, which we have now been able to declassify, show that the woman police are looking for is Nancy Indoveria Kigunzu.

A reconstruction of her appearance shows a heavyset woman, born in January 1977, aged 46, and not the 54-year-old mother of three, Teresia Wanjiru – whose family is now crying foul.

The country’s intelligence services have documented that Nancy Kigunzu has compromised officers from Parklands Police Station, Central Police Station, Pangani and Kamukunji Police Stations and some chiefs to avoid arrests and seizures.

She is said to be able to influence the transfer of police officers.

In June 2022, after mounting pressure on the police establishment, Kigunzu and her associates were arrested and arraigned in the Kahawa courts.

The arrest was so suspicious, unlikely and surprising that many did not believe it, but they soon did when the ODDP did something strange. They struck a deal with the woman they call the dangerous queen of drugs and released her after she paid a fine of Sh525,000.

Now her family cannot understand why the police call her Mathe wa Ngara.

For people like Mieno, who has lived in Kariua for decades, it is not even acceptable to ask about her whereabouts.

Teresia Wanjiru’s family is now demanding that the police stop playing games and release their ageing mother.

NTV’s investigation has revealed that the only reason the police were able to recover the millions of shillings is because the team at DCI headquarters never informed their counterparts of the full details of the operation.

A confidant told this unit that the real Mathe was tipped off minutes before the operation.
