Nanyuki pastor accused of killing woman, to be charged with murder
A pastor was on Tuesday arraigned before the High Court in Nanyuki over the murder of a woman, whose remains were only discovered recently.
Pastor David Wagiita of the First Pentecostal Church in Nanyuki and the prime suspect in the murder of Ruth Gathoni did not plead to the charges when he was presented before Resident Judge Anthony Ndung’u.
The prosecution asked the court to defer the plea-taking to enable the State to appoint a lawyer for the defendant.
Murder is a capital offence and suspects who cannot afford to hire a lawyer receive legal representation funded by the State.
Justice Ndung’u directed that the accused be presented before him on February 21 this year to be formally charged with murder.
The deceased was reported missing on August 18, 2018, with the family telling detectives that she was last seen with Pastor Wagiita in Nyeri Town boarding a Nanyuki-bound matatu.
Soon after her disappearance, Wagiita was arrested and charged with abduction but he was acquitted by the court due to lack of evidence.
This prompted the family to embark on a frantic search for their lost kin which only ended on September 30 last year when a human skull was exhumed in a shallow grave by construction workers at Muthaiga Estate in Nanyuki Town.
The workers were digging a trench to put up a perimeter wall when they came across a human skull and hair believed to be that of a woman. It is in the same compound where Gathoni and the pastor are said to have spent a night before she was reported missing.
Detectives visited the scene and exhumed more remains which upon DNA testing early this month were confirmed to be that of the long-lost woman.
The remains of Gathoni were eventually accorded a decent burial on January 9 this year at Unjiru village, Tetu Sub-county in Nyeri County.
