Nandi MCAs nursing injuries after brawl in county assembly
Several members of the Nandi County Assembly are nursing minor injuries after a brawl broke out in the assembly on Tuesday.
The chaos, which rocked the assembly and lasted until midnight, started when Kabisagaa Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Davis Sum tabled a report to ascertain projects undertaken and paid for by the county government in 30 wards.
According to Mr Sum, the report was meant to draw the attention of the county assembly to the existence of ghost projects in the county.
The acrimony and altercation that led to the physical fight among members started when some MCAs tried to stop the mover of the motion from tabling it in the House.
This led to an exchange of fists between members who were in favour of the report and those who were against it.
According to the mover of the motion, the report was to guide the assembly in setting up an ad-hoc committee to investigate allegations of corruption relating to the alleged existence of ghost projects in the county.
MCAs opposing the motion disrupted proceedings as the County Speaker, Cheruiyot Melly, had just called the assembly to order.
The assembly was immediately divided into two factions; one in favour of the report and taking it to the next level, and another against the motion.
Sensing the tension in the assembly, the Speaker decided to leave the chambers, accompanied by the Sergeant-at-Arms and other security officers manning the premises. As he left, MCAs exchanged kicks and punches.
The police were forced to use tear gas to quell the situation.
The assembly is currently split down the middle, with one camp in favour of Governor Stephen Sang and another claiming that he is incapable of tackling the rampant corruption in the county.
Some of the MCAs in support of the report include Raymond Chelulei (Songhor/soba), Maina Shangu (Lessos), and Martin Douglas (Chemelil/Chemase) wards respectively.
The MCAs who oppose the report include deputy speaker Wilson Sang (Chepkumia), Walter Teno (Kabiyet), and Milka Chumba (UDA Nominated MCA.
Assembly Speaker Melly declined to comment on the incident, promising to deliver a comprehensive report after analyzing the situation.
