Nairobi Muslim MCAs threaten to go to court over ‘lack of inclusivity’ in Sakaja’s CEC appointments
A group of Muslim youth led by MCAs Hashim Kamau and Dabar Mohamed, has asked Nairobi MCAs to reject the list of nominated CECs by Nairobi Governor Johnson Saakaja in its entirety citing a lack of inclusivity.
The group has asked Sakaja to self-reflect and correct the list until it completely reflects Kenya’s face.
“The Muslim Community has noted with concern the appointments made by Governor Sakaja yesterday. In his appointments of top members of his executive, we feel he has not done our community fairness and equity as required by human decency and the law,” read a statement by the group.
According to the group, Nairobi City County is Kenya’s capital, and its government must be representative of the country, with no community left out.
“It is becoming a trend to ignore minorities and overlook equality, equity and fair representation in appointed positions not only in Nairobi but also in other counties and at the national level,” the group added.
The group cited the Muslim community’s contribution to the county’s economic growth, claiming that it pays more than half of the county revenue through annual land rates in Muslim-dominated areas of Nairobi County such as South C, South B, Langata, Eastleigh, Parklands, and Kariobangi, among others.
“It’s therefore absurd for the Governor to ignore representation in such an important group in his line up,” the group said.
Sakaja’s appointees
Sakaja unveiled his ten-member cabinet, claiming that his team was carefully chosen and competent.
Charles Kerich (Finance and Economic Planning), Brian Mulama (Talents, skills, development, and care), and Patrick Mbogo (mobility and works) have been named by the City boss.
In the list is former Chief Officer lands Stephen Mwangi ( Buildings and urban planning), Ibrahim Auma (Administration and personnel), Rosemary Kariuki (Hustlers and business opportunities, Maureen Njeri ( Green Nairobi ), Anastacia Mutethia ( Health, wellness and nutrition) and Susan Silantoi who will be in charge of inclusivity, public participation and customer service.
Sakaja also named David Njoroge as his Chief Of Staff, Lawrence Wambua as his Economic Affairs Advisor, Elias Mutuma (Legal Advisor), Dr. Samora Otieno (Health Advisor), William Ndung’u ‘Fazul’(Political Advisor) and Prof. Washington Yotto Ochieng as his Mobility Advisor.
