Mystery surrounding Rita Waeni’s brutal murder

When she read her grandfather’s eulogy on January 6, 2023, little did she know that eight days later she would meet a stranger she lived interacting with through Instagram and who would end her life as she had earlier predicted.

Abductors of Rita Waeni Muendo, a 20-year-old woman who was murdered inside a house located along Thika Road Mall (TRM) Drive, Kasarani Sub-County demanded Sh500,000 from her father Mr Steven Mutea in order to set her free but the money was never sent.

By last evening the head of the woman had not been found.

A police source said that the suspect used a hacksaw to cut the body into pieces.

Yesterday, the family said that she left her aunt’s place in Syokimau, Machakos and headed to Roysambu, Nairobi where she was to meet the man who allegedly ended her life and is now in police custody following his arrest at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

“On Sunday, January 14th, at 5.00 am, her father received a message, delivered from her phone number, demanding a ransom of Sh500,000 within 24 hours for her release,” Dr Lilian Mutea, the family spokesperson said.

The family further said that they have already positively identified the deceased and that she was killed by the abductor who went ahead to demand money from them.

According to Dr Mutea, Waeni was an intelligent, smart girl who was equally kind and caring.

“Her family and friends will forever cherish the countless memories of Waeni’s joyous presence and her dedication to making a positive impact on those around her. During this period of grief, we kindly request privacy as we mourn the loss of Waeni,” the statement further read.

The family said that officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were very helpful to them and they believe that they will eventually get justice.

The Nation has established that when the killer of Waeni demanded money from her father. He reported the matter at Mlolongo Police Station and DCI officers quickly kicked off investigations to save the life of the lady who was a third-year student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

Reporters yesterday visited her home in Mukimwani Village in Makueni County where neighbors described her as a role model saying that she was very active in church and that she had performed so well in her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) making her amongst the few who have made it to university in the locality.

At Mutea’s homestead an eerie silence greeted visitors. The gate to the homestead was locked and very little activity was taking place around there.

The neighbors and family were struggling to come to terms with the brutal murder of the lady.
