My life is in danger, Kapenguria businesswoman says accusing Ethiopian ex-lover

“My life is in danger,” Kapenguria tycoon Scovia Chelagat says, accusing her Ethiopian ex-lover of threatening her.

A controversy is looming between Kapenguria businesswoman Scovia Chelagat and her refugee ex-lover, Zelalm Engida Dezalnge, popularly known as “Mzunguu,” as she claims her life is in danger.

Engida, of Ethiopian origin, is alleged to have threatened Chelagat after she revealed claims of his involvement in smuggling ammunition.

However, Engida has denied the claims, saying their differences emerged due to issues surrounding their wealth.

The two, who are involved in the wine and spirits selling business with many outlets in major towns within West Pokot County, separated two years ago and have been in a dispute over the ownership of properties.

The drama between the two former lovers has left the public and authorities in limbo as to who is telling the truth.

Chelagat, a mother of two and a nurse by profession, says Engida is a refugee with question marks.

“In 2010, a refugee came and befriended my son Hillary Patel Kibet. The boy was close to him, thinking he was his father because they look alike. The man was my customer because he used to drink beer at my wine and spirits joint. He told me that he was a refugee from Kakuma. Shortly after, we fell in love,” she said.

Chelagat said that she obtained wealth from her Indian baby fathers.

“I have two children with Indians with whom I used to work in their hospital, and they supported me with capital to start my business when they left the country. I started my business in 2004,” she said.

Chelagat accused Engida of being insincere and of being in the country illegally.

“In 2014, because he is a refugee, he promised to take my child abroad in case he goes to Canada or America because of their closeness. In 2016, he went to Uganda where he obtained an identity card. He was a suspect and was deported in 2017 and came back after one year. He was hiding a lot of information,” she said.

She noted that they have been staying as friends and the man had promised to leave after some time.

“He came when he was a mere pauper on the earth’s surface, and I have empowered him. He orders ammunition the whole night and sells them in Marakwet and Samburu. He hides them under the bed. This is what made me become scared. I told him No. He is a rebel,” Chelagat claimed.

She noted that she reported the matter to the police two years ago, and no action was taken.

“We separated in 2021 after finding ammunition in my house, which prompted me to speak out. I started reporting the matter in 2021. I have gone to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), but they don’t want to help me. I have reported many times, but they cover him up. I have now decided to go to the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA).

She now calls on the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, to save her.

“After the recent report on March 25th, 2023, I am now sleeping in lodgings out of fear. I’m not after property but want the government to save my life. The man has criminal cases. He radicalizes youths. He has sold my vehicles. Kindiki, please come and save my life and the lives of other Kenyans,” she said.

However, Engida rubbished the claims, saying the woman took away all his properties.

“She took two million from Equity Bank without my knowledge, and I refused to pay something I don’t know. I decided to move before being chased,” he said.

He defended himself, saying Chelagat was only jealous of his newfound family.

“I have now become bad, and initially I was good. She blocked me from all her phones. Let the phone lines be scrutinized by Safaricom. God blessed me with my wealth, and why should I kill someone?” he posed.

He noted that they used to stay as husband and wife, but when she became rich, she started being a nuisance and boastful.

“I left her more than eight plots, and I don’t want anything. She is forcing things. Let her bring her evidence. Let her show where I buy and sell the ammunition. I left her with a lot of beer in the store. She has sold all the vehicles and plots. The last KES 800,000, I went to pay for beer. There is a lot of money in her drawer, even rats eat some,” he said.

“I was born in Napulato, Uganda, and I have stayed in Kenya for many years,” he added.

He has threatened to move to court, citing that all his wealth has been taken by Chelagat.

“I helped the women to make a lot of money,” he said.

The case of the two is now at Kapenguria Police Station.

West Pokot Sub County Police commandant Kipkemoi Kirui pointed out that they got a report over the threats.

“We arrested the man, and he was given a police bond. He has a Ugandan Identity card,” he said.

Kirui said that they are still investigating the matter.
