Murkomen meets Chinese Ambassador, reveals plans to expedite JKIA expansion

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed plans to expand Kenya’s airports starting with the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Murkomen spoke after meeting the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Thou Pingfian on Wednesday.

The CS also expressed his willingness to collaborate closely with the Chinese government in modernizing and digitizing the transport industry and exploring potential new areas of cooperation that would benefit Kenyans.

“As Government, we consider China a close friend and a great partner owing to their active involvement in the transformation of Kenya’s infrastructure landscape over the last 20 years resulting in the cheaper, faster and more efficient movement of people and goods between cities and towns,” Murkomen said.

“We look forward to continued collaboration in infrastructure development and attracting more investment into the sector,” he added.

Murkomen also called for the formulation of a workable model that would encourage the transfer of technology, skills and knowledge to Kenyan youth through the formation of joint working teams, scholarships, and training.

During his vetting for the CS position last month, Murkomen pledged to restart negotiations with a Chinese company that had been awarded the contract to construct the second terminal at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as a new building.

Following the payment of KES 4.2 billion to the contractor in advance and KES 75 million for a groundbreaking ceremony that was presided over by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on May 23, 2014, the tender was canceled in March 2016.

Anhui Civil Engineering Group (ACEG) and China Aero Technology Engineering International Corporation (Catic), two Chinese companies, had been chosen to construct the KES 56 billion terminal, which would serve 20 million passengers annually.

“If approved, my priority will be to relook at the Greenfield terminal tender which was cancelled in 2016 after the contractor had been paid Sh4.2 billion,” Murkomen said.

Murkomen said the Chinese contractor had filed a claim with the International Court of Arbitration for KES 17.6 billion against the KAA for contract breach.
